Side by side: Victoria Falls and Niagara Falls

Victoria Falls is a waterfall on the Zambezi River, on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe3. Niagara Falls is a group of three waterfalls4. The cards and the table put the two next to each other.

Which is bigger, Niagara Falls or Victoria Falls?

Victoria Falls is bigger than Niagara Falls in both height and width. Here’s how they measure up:

  • Height: Victoria Falls drops 108 m5, against about 57 m4 at Horseshoe Falls, the largest of Niagara’s falls.
  • Width: Victoria Falls stretches 1,708 m5, while Horseshoe Falls is about 790 m4 wide.
  • Sheet of water: in Wikipedia’s words, Victoria Falls is the world’s largest sheet of falling water3.
  • Spray: it usually rises more than 400 m3.

Water volume is a closer call. Niagara has the highest flow rate of any waterfall in North America, averaging 2,400 m³/s4 a year. Victoria Falls peaks at about 500 million litres a minute6, but its yearly average is lower than that peak suggests, because the flow swings so much by season3.

Seasons: high water, low water and boat season

Timing matters far more at Victoria Falls than at Niagara, because the Zambezi’s flow changes so much through the year. Here’s how the year runs at each:

Victoria Falls

  • Rainy season, November to March: more water and a more dramatic falls, though the spray can hide the view7 at high water.
  • Peak flow comes in April6.
  • Dry season, April to October: less water, and by October the falls may be just a trickle7.
  • Winter, May to August8, brings mild, largely dry and sunny days.

Niagara Falls

  • Summer is the peak visitor period4.
  • The Maid of the Mist boat season opened on 24 April 20269.
  • From 1 to 8 November it runs daily from 9:00 to 4:0010.

Devil’s Pool and Angel’s Pool on the Zambian side

Devil’s Pool is an infinity pool on the lip of Victoria Falls, on the Zambian side3. Angel’s Pool takes over when the water is high. The operators don’t quite agree on when Devil’s Pool opens:

Which side is better to see Victoria Falls?

The Zimbabwean side suits most first-timers: historically it has drawn far more visitors than the Zambian side, because its visitor facilities are more developed13. The Zambian side has Devil’s Pool and, usually, cheaper flights.

In Victoria Falls town, most places are no more than 3 km7 from the falls. Livingstone is generally a fairly safe town, but it has very few street lights14. Read up on Livingstone on the Zambian side before you choose a base.

The steel-arch Victoria Falls Bridge7 joins the two sides and gives you a view of the falls from its centre. If you can’t decide, see both sides on a guided day tour:

A few things the table doesn’t show:

  • Maid of the Mist prices are in US dollars and include the elevator down to the landing10.
  • Niagara Parks lists Journey Behind the Falls at $33.0016 without naming a currency. The guide site niagarafallslive.com gives $33.00 CAD plus 13% HST17.
  • Off-season parking at Niagara Falls State Park costs $10 a day in Lot 1 from 12 October 2026 to 31 March 202718.

Which suits whom

Victoria Falls suits a longer adventure trip; Niagara suits a shorter visit built around a boat ride and a tunnel walk.

Choose Victoria Falls if:

  • you want adventure: the activities include jet boating, whitewater rafting, bungee jumping and mountain biking19;
  • you’d like a safari too: many visitors take a day trip to Chobe National Park in Botswana20;
  • you have time to spare: Wild Horizons suggests three to four nights6;
  • you don’t mind a long journey: from Bulawayo or Harare it’s another domestic flight or 5 to 10 hours20 by road.

Choose Niagara Falls if:

  • you want to go in any season: Niagara Falls State Park is open 365 days a year2;
  • you like classic set pieces: Journey Behind the Falls takes you through 130-year-old tunnels cut through the bedrock16, and the Maid of the Mist calls itself one of the longest continuously running tourist attractions in North America9;
  • crowds don’t bother you: Niagara gets over 20 million visitors a year4;
  • it’s a honeymoon: Wikivoyage calls it a popular, though often tacky and touristy, honeymoon destination21.

If Victoria Falls wins, the where to stay guide compares beds in the town and in Livingstone.
