What to try

Zimbabwean food is built around sadza. To eat what locals eat, ask for “sadza and stew/relish”3.

Tourism Update reported that Dusty Road, a traditional Zimbabwean restaurant in Chinotimba township, cooks all its food on open fires in cast-iron pots2. Bookings are essential2.

Sadza

A thick ground corn paste, vaguely like polenta3, made by mixing cornmeal with water4. Zimbabweans eat it in some form nearly every day3.

Sadza nedovi

Sadza served with vegetables cooked in a peanut sauce3.

Inkukhu eleDovi

Chicken in peanut butter sauce2, on the menu at Dusty Road.

Chimodho

Toasted, wood-oven-baked maize bread2, also cooked at Dusty Road.

Boerewors

A long, often well-spiced barbecued sausage of beef and other meat such as pork, eaten with sadza4.

Mutakura

A traditional mix of peanuts, boiled and sun-dried maize, black-eyed peas and Bambara groundnuts4.

Biltong

A jerky-style snack of spiced raw meat hung to dry in the shade4.

Also worth ordering if you see them:

  • rice cooked with peanut butter, eaten with thick gravy, mixed vegetables and meat4
  • mbambaira (sweet potatoes) and chibage (corn on the cob)3

Where to eat and drink

Everything is close together here: most places in town are no more than 3 km from the falls1. Here’s how the food splits by area:

  • Victoria Falls town: a few coffee shops, sandwich shops and fast food1 outlets, including Brooks Cafe & Deli Vic Falls and Victoria Falls Coffee Company.
  • Hotels and lodges: all the hotels have restaurants, and many visitors try a different one each night1. Baines Restaurant and The Cassia Restaurant are on the fine-dining end. To pick a base, see the budget and luxury stays compared.
  • The gorge: The Lookout Cafe - Wild Horizons overlooks the canyon below the falls, including the bridge1.
  • Livingstone, Zambia: the town sits across the border1, with Kubu Cafe, Zest Bar And Restaurant Livingstone and Limpo’s PUB & Grill among the places listed. Unsure of the geography? Read where Victoria Falls is, on the border.

The Boma and bush dinners

The Boma - Dinner & Drum Show is dinner with a show, on the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge estate 3 km from the city centre7. Here’s what the evening includes:

  • a meal of four courses: a platter of nibbles, campfire soup, a braai (barbecue) buffet of meats and local dishes, then desserts7
  • a mopane worm eating challenge7, if you’re feeling brave
  • traditional dancing, storytelling, a fortune teller, face painting and interactive drumming7

You can book the Boma dinner and drum show online. It’s out of town, so sort your ride back before you go; the Zimbabwe road development update has the local transport picture.

Further out, Bushtracks Africa’s night game drive includes a bush dinner and lasts 5½ hours8. On the Zambezi River itself, there’s a dinner cruise on the Zambezi. For everything else, browse the activities to do in Victoria Falls.

Drinks and nightlife

For a drink, start with the hotels: all the hotels have large, well-stocked bars1. River Brewing Co serves its own beer1.

Local drinks to look for:

  • Zambezi lager: a pilsner-like local beer3.
  • Chibuku: a local brew based on a traditional beer recipe, usually sold in a 2-litre plastic bottle called a “skud”3.
  • Utshwala: locally brewed beer2, on Dusty Road’s menu.
  • Mazoe: a bright orange concentrate you dilute with water3, if you’re not drinking.

Paying for meals and money tips

Bring US dollars: street vendors, taxi drivers, supermarkets, restaurants and activity operators all work in US dollars3.

  • ATMs: they dispense US dollars in $100 notes1. Small notes are hard to find, but shops and restaurants can break them1.
  • Cards: activities can be paid by credit card in US dollars, but foreign cards are rarely accepted outside Victoria Falls1.
  • Currency: Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) has been the official currency since 8 April 2024, yet foreign currencies remain legal tender9.
  • Self-catering: there are Pick n Pay and OK supermarkets1 in town.
